The Grace of Ordinary Days
Described as “Tuesdays with Morrie meets Georgia O’Keeffe", The
Grace of Ordinary Days, by poet Kay Saunders and nature photographer Bernie
Saunders, is a rare glimpse into the separate but united lives of a mother and
son.
Contemplative poetry and stunning flower
photography are woven together by a narrative thread in two voices. Mother and
son retell their versions of memories from a shared past and how each perceived
them differently. The stories shed light and perspective that leads to
understanding and forgiveness. The Grace of Ordinary Days can help us to love
better, and remind us of our own beauty, truth and passion.
“This book is a small treasure that
communicates deeply and on so many levels. I was moved by the lovely harmony
created between two artists -- mother and son -- as they describe their
different journeys in photos and poetry, held always in the embrace of their
relationship. What emerges is a profoundly moving story of parenting and
growing up." - Margaret
J. Wheatley, author of Turning to One Another
"The Grace of Ordinary Days is a rare collaboration between mother and son. It opens with Bernie inviting his eighty-year-old mother Kay, ravaged in body but soaring in spirit, to join him in this project. With words, poems, and photographs we enter both the interior of their relationship and the beauty of the natural world. When the book ends with Bernie sitting by Kay who is nearing death in morphine sleep, the reader can only say ‘Thank you!’ to both mother and son." - Harriet
Lerner, Ph.D., author of The Dance of Anger and The Dance of Fear
About the Authors
Kay Saunders published three books of poetry
before her death in 2003. For Kay, reading, writing and teaching poetry were a
way of being awake in the world, a connective way of reaching out to others and
building relationships. She embraced poetry as reflection, contemplation and
self-study.
Bernie Saunders believes that life is truly a
work of art. He is a professional photographer, author, highly regarded
speaker, consultant and organizational facilitator with more than 40 years of
experience in human development. He earned his masters of applied theology
(MAT) from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. He advocates for people
committed to claiming their natural creativity, thereby making the world a
better place.
